Music to Her Ears

January 6, 2011

I know here at Chemomama, the topic of discussion is usually related to cancer, spina bifida or my experiences with either of these two things. Today, I’m branching out…to music. Not music in general, or my own music tastes, but rather, the music tastes of Chemobaby. She has selected the first song in her lifetime that resonates with her musically (but I hope not lyrically). I am speaking of none other than “California Gurls,” by Katy Perry, featuring Snoop Dogg.

If you’re not familiar with the tune, here is an excerpt of the lyrics:

California girls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes
Bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin
So hot
We’ll melt your Popsicle
Oooooh oh oooooh

California girls
We’re undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
Westcoast represent
Now put your hands up
Oooooh oh oooooh

Oh, it’s bad. She wants it on You Tube. She wants it in the car. Over, and over and over again. There’s no escaping this song in our house. And while I know the song is highly inappropriate for her, I can’t help but smile at her bopping up and down to the beat so happily. Does a mother have a right to deny her child this level of happiness? For now, I have to let this slide. I can worry about ethics later, when it really counts.

  1. She comes by it naturally with the last name Cali! You go girl! It’s Hannah you have to watch out for with that song. XO, Dina

  2. Love it! Music is in her blood 🙂

    • This is true Barbara! She went to a couple of concerts in my belly…Linkin Park, the Cure, so I started her off early!

  3. Rockin! Dante got an MP3 player (ipod knockoff). The only thing he wanted was Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust.” It’s funny to see what resonates with kids.

  4. Two very good points, Dina! And, no Nancy, you can’t deny her any bit of happiness! 🙂

    Tricia

  5. I agree, she doesn’t know anything about the lyrics, she’s just enjoying the music. Let her rock !!

  6. You can’t question the music that speaks to your soul, whether you’re two, or 82! Good for Amanda for expressing herself like that! 🙂 Of course, I’m sure Mommy will be “sick” of that song way before Amanda will. Hee-hee!
